Grabbing & Tugging on the Leash, Part 4 of 4
For dogs who grab their leashes in an attempt to avoid returning back home, we could introduce some fun activities as soon as the dog is back on the property, like a food scatter, as mentioned by @programdev ✅ , a game of fetch or some flirt pole play. @jenz also suggested the great idea of using a scent trail! ✅ When going back inside, we can develop the habit of providing a food puzzle to create some happy anticipation.
And finally, we can practice the pattern of leave-then-return to the property. We begin by walking just a short distance off the property, and then returning back home, with the lion’s share of rewards occurring on the way back. This back and forth is repeated, and the walking-away portion can gradually be increased.
