????Listen as Kelsey emphasizes how to avoid overwhelm & frustration for both the ???? dog and owner. Teaching skills and practicing them is awesome when all is going well – but when a dog needs some other support, a skill may not be relevant.

Have you experienced this? (I sure have!) – Asking a dog to perform something when their brain is just… somewhere else? ????

How can we help improve SKILLS while not reaching overwhelm?

Though I can’t see/hear the video, I sure do speak *very* regularly to clients about not giving any cues (sometimes they do so repeatedly) when the dog is in a situation where he’s having a hard time coping. First, it’s just feed treats (using ample distance when possible) to help the dog calm down and focus on the handler, while coming back to his ‘thinking self’ before expecting him to be able to respond to any cues.

So many pet parents are certain their dog knows SIT, but in highly exciting or stressful situations, I don’t think the dog can even hear the cue, let alone respond to it.

Hi @virginiad Sorry to hear you are having video playback issues… which browser are you using? These often do better in Chrome.

Alas, it is Chrome that I’m using now, per your suggestion last week.

I’m sorry to miss this workshop, it looks really interesting. It’s good to think about overwhelming the handler as well.

    Thanks,

You are so right, @Cyn – how many handlers are overwhelmed, especially in a group dog class!? No wonder they struggle to remember what was taught. Great point.

Argh yes the “repeated cue-itis”! I have had a good long journey teaching my family to not use repeated cues. It’s a tough one. I am guilty of this to. I find I have to literally put my hands in my pockets to keep me quiet ????
