  • What if my dog won't pay attention at all? – Let's Brainstorm!- Video Case Study

Posted by Catherine Comden on October 11, 2021 at 1:11 pm

We’re getting practical with our motivation strategies! Recently, @Anna shared some challenges she is having with her dog who is very busy and distracted during training. Watch this short video clip then let’s brainstorm!

Drop one tip for dealing with a dog who is distracted- we call this competing motivations – and how you might handle getting her to focus.

Tomorrow, I’ll post my response to Anna. But first – what are your ideas? Remember – there is no one perfect answer – so post fearlessly! Your simple solution might be just the nugget another DD member needs to try.

Does the video show Anna training her dog? I only saw you Catherine.

No. Anna was just calling into the meeting that day. So, it’s just her voice, @Adriano . My camera was on, so you do see my reply. I’ll share my answer tomorrow – but what do you think could help Anna with her pup?

You have to be more attractive than anything else around the pup. Use whatever you have available. Food, toys, your voice, your body… And I think it’s fine if the pup looks away, but you have to figure out what brings his attention back to you. Each pup is going to be different than the other, and some breeds like to be around their owners more than others… I’m not familiar with the Aussiedoodle, but pups are pups, and if she’s only 4 months old everything is pretty much new to her. How could she not get super exited?

It seems to me that Anna is trying to socializa the pup and while training.

I would need more information to state my full option, but I think a more controlled environment helps to start the training process, and when out into the world during the critical socialization period, use those moments to give positive reinforcement, but not expecting the pup to respond to a cue or be totally focused on you because there’s just too much distraction in this new world!

As promised, here’s the entire clip where we begin brainstorming ideas to help Anna with her bizzy girl.

What are some other ideas you have to share?

I think I totally misunderstood the topic. Sorry about that.

I did learn a new technique. Thank you Catherine and good luck Anna.

@Adriano I thought you shared good ideas and sound advice – not off topic at all, for what was given. Keep it up! ????
