Hi @Bernerlabreclectus – there are several dog trainers and horse trainers (Peggy Hogan) who teach in depth about start buttons. Here’s one podcast. Start buttons grow out of a beginning with classical conditioning, then it shifts to the DOG starting the request for the sequence. Done right, it’s absolutely a way to get complete “opt in” from the dog for procedures. Rather than the dog tolerating what we must do, they actually give permission. And that consent, that agency, is a powerful relationship builder as it brings so much trust.
And, YES, a dog of any age can learn start buttons!
