Hi Martha,
I’m thinking your pup might have reacted so strongly at the park due to possible ” trigger stacking” which is just a fancy way of saying that there could have been lots of things that filled his emotional cup at the park, and the bicycle just pushed him over the edge. So he was handling the other dogs at the park but the addition of the bike was just more than he could handle at that moment. Some things you could try…go to the park at “off” hours where it is less likely to be busy. Then you can practice rewarding Bumble when he sees other dogs or people at a distance as was described earlier but is unlikely to get overwhelmed by too much activity. Continue to practice with the bike in and around your house where Bumble is comfortable – rewarding him when he looks at but doesn’t bark or lunge when the bike is going by first slowly and far away then faster and closer. Boring is good in this scenario! Once Bumble is showing you happy relaxed body language when he sees the bike at home you can slowly work your way up to bringing the bike to the park at off hours then eventually going to the park when it is busier.
What what do you think?
