@KTinaN It really depends…. if it would put you at risk of stepping in the middle of a dog fight, nope. On the other hand, splitting can be a WONDERFUL technique to chill everyone out – and we see dogs do it all the time. On the farm where I’m staying, yesterday I got to observe an 10year old female border collie split a young puppy from harrassing an 16yr old and weak Lab. They all live together – the pup is 10 weeks old (and already lifting his leg!) and unmercifully harasses the old man (who is extremely tolerant and although he is telling the puppy “no”, the pup isn’t listening to him.) The border collie had stepped between them several times but crazy pants pup wasn’t getting the clue. Then the female came in and knocked the little guy on his patootie with a big display of teeth and a firm correction, and then stood next to the old man and enforced it until the pup thought he ought to move on. It was a perfect example of dogs working it out without bloodshed.
