I like to start with working on engagement exercises when I have a dog that’s not paying attention when outside. One of my favorites is the Sprinkler game. The dog can be on a long line or an area that he can safely be off leash. I wait for the dog to come up to me and make eye contact The dog doesn’t have to sit or down, just make eye contact. I mark the behavior and reward. I then turn my back to the dog and wait for dog to come in front and make eye contact then mark and reward. I keep turning my back to the dog for several repeats. I then give a release word and throw a treat away from me. I then wait for dog to engage with me again.
