I like using staircases. … “Just because they can climb up the three steps to the porch, or even take them all in a giant leap, doesn’t mean they are ready to climb all the way to the top of the pyramids without stopping. We have to work up to it.”
I also use “Just because we have taught them the alphabet, and to sound out a few words doesn’t mean they are ready to read The History of The World.” people usually get that one, too.
