“Are there ways we can avoid frustration when building a stay?”
My initial knee jerk thought is, reward frequently while working on these, especially duration. I emphasize duration since that, in my opinion, is the longest where nothing seems to happen for the dog. Expecting the dog to wait for extended times without any consequence is a lot to ask. If I can build duration using a high rate or reinforcement at first, then slowly switch to less frequent or random, then frustration just may not occur- the dog hopefully knows the reward is coming, just not when.
