Great discussion starter – I look forward to everyone’s ideas. I think targeting is the right direction to go, but I think I would try a chin target, rather than a nose-push. Theoretically, a closed-mouth chin target is incompatible with licking, though you might get a lick first – it might be better for YOU to teach the initial steps before transferring to the adults in the home. Then you can teach the kids a target too. Have them rest their hand on a pillow so they don’t retract their open hand, maybe? Or they can layer their hand on top of mom’s when she’s successfully gotten the dog’s chin target on cue. What do you think?
