I am in terms with @Jenz . Totally agree with her. We have to work on changing the emotional response – which is frustrated to being normal happy/calm about other dogs playing.
I would set up a situation like outside the dog park, but Brody is still able to look at other dogs through the fence. Maybe going during off-peak hours when there are fewer dogs (4-5 dogs) can help. Or in the similar situation in the video but Brody on leash with the handler and two dogs playing at a very far distance. Have him settle on mat/Kuranda bed at a distance, and reinforce for being settle/calm. The handler should be in a calm state.
We can play with some cues like ‘Touch’, ‘sit-down-sit-down’, or anything Brody loves, maybe a simple sniffing game can help him to relax better. I would also make sure his physical needs are met before we train in this situation. A long loose leash sniffari walk around the dog park can do.
Games we can play in between settling on the mat – Engage-disengage games. Toss some treats in the grass and let him sniff and eat. Some orientation games – where you roll treat on the floor, let him grab it, when he turns back to you (orients towards you) roll another treat in the opposite direction. These games can help him gain confidence and control.
Eventually, making sure he settles down/calm on the mat decrease the distance between Brody and the dog park fence. The idea here is to make him understand that he can just chill on his bed and look at other dogs playing.
About his play preference, as long as his needs are met I wouldn’t bother much. If he prefers to play with only one specific dog, totally fine, it’s his choice.
