This is Jamie. I’ve been working with him for almost a year to recondition his fear of muzzles and veterinary work. He is terrified of the needle and is very touch-sensitive. With very slow and steady progress, we can now put the muzzle on with ease and have been building his duration. (He’s at 10 minutes either moving or lying now!) Start slowly and progressively. We started with practicing a chin rest and then began introducing the muzzle. During the initial chin rest practice we would casually leave the muzzle near us and mark/reward him for checking it out. He quickly grew excited to see it, although the wearing process took a while. It took months, but now he’s ok with one mom offering the muzzle and the other (or me) clipping it. We were at least able to deliver his lepto shot but now comes the harder part of blood draws and rabies. Work with the dog’s comfort and don’t rush it.
