I always love teaching Touch; listening to the variety of ways that others put this cue into actions makes me love it even more.
It is generally so simple to teach, and gets a team learning both the basics of Mark & Reinforce and Shaping together with quick successes that often thrill both the dog and their person!
Sometimes I work with having the dog learn to Touch something other than a person’s hand (when the hander is very tacitly sensitive, has hand-mobility limitations, or when the dog is very hesitant to interact that closely with a person). The Clik-Stik is a pretty cool gadget but a simple wooden spoon works great and even has some advantages over the Clik-Stik.
What targets other than hands are go-to’s for you?
…it can also just be about fun! The picture is of Puzzle doing Way Up, which was taught with her Touching my raised hand.
