YIKES, the situation with the tethered (and very likely resource guarding) shelter dog seems very unnerving for everyone involved (dog included of course).
While I understand it is meant as a safety measure – limiting a dog’s directional options, with the added stress of tension on their collar from a tight leash/line/tether, can be a recipe for even more heightened reactivity. While in sheltering, I saw this play out a number of times. I always preferred to have another skilled staff member holding the leash but there are not always the resources for that and sometimes it is simply too risky.
While I do sometimes suggest a tether when working with an owned resource guarding dog, it is not my go-to for the reasons stated above. A sturdy baby gate as a barrier can be a better option, depending on the set-up of the house.
I’m very amused that you went straight to corvids @jenz ! While they are not popular with birders, they sure are my favorites. It was ravens that I had the pleasure of doing some field work with.
Is your experience with ethology with avian as well as canid? Learning to careful watch another, who we don’t have an individual emotional bond with, can be very enlightening!
