The funny thing is that my experience is the flip-flop/opposite; I started with behavior work in sheltering and learned training (Sit, Down, Stay) later! Early on, my focus was helping dogs and cats through their stays in the shelter environment through enrichment, confidence and safety building exercises, handling and leashing counter conditioning, etc. I’ve been able to bring both of those skill sets together to help my clients and their dogs.
I think the biggest change in how I train a specific skill, and one I am definitely still working through, is how to teach “Leave It”. I’m always striving to be aware of the delicate balance of some challenge while avoiding frustration.
What method are folks using these days? Have you changed the way you teach it too? If so, what motivated/inspired you to do so?
