I’ve been training him now for about a year. He hasn’t really been on the treadmill that much, but food and love will motivate him to do just about anything. All I did at the very beginning was I started with a leash and some treats. The only reason I had the leash was to tie it around the treadmill and put the emergency stop cord onto the leash. That way if anything went wrong or he slowed down, it would automatically stop the treadmill. Then I would stand at the front and move the treadmill very slowly giving him treats as he ran on the treadmill. As he got more and more comfortable I would speed it up. And, of course, for safety reasons when I stopped the treadmill I would make him stay and he would get off on my command. That way he never got on or off the treadmill when I didn’t say that he could. That way I avoided situations like him trying to jump off in the middle or getting himself hurt at any point in time. After a while, I could just takeoff the leash and let him go.
