Thanks for your reply. That is definitely a challenge for walking shelter dogs because they usually get very excited when they see they are leaving their kennel. In the current shelter I volunteer at, the kennel staff is responsible for putting the harness on the dogs and bringing them out for the dogs’ safety. But, when I volunteered at St. Hubert’s and did bring the dogs out of the kennel, typically I would stand in front of the kennel for a second, just so the dog could get used to my presence. I’d then carefully put my foot at the bottom of the door and unlock it, but not open yet. I’d ensure I had the slip lead in the right position to place over the dogs head, secure it and open the door. I like St. Hubert’s b/c, they use the slip lead only to get the dogs’ out of their kennel, and then they have a secure room with a door that you bring them to to put the harness and walking leash on them. That way, they are not distracted by other dogs, and you ensure the equipment is on them correctly for a safe walk! Hope that helps!
