What is playful or not playful about the Brindle? I think more of the brindle’s behaviors are in the not playful or rude category, vs. playful. The sniffing on top of the BD body with a stiff body, does not seem playful. The licking of the BD head might be considered playful and an invitation to play, but then brindle seems to be surprised after the BD shake-off. The brindle has escalating vocalization and puts both front legs on the BD body, which seems more confrontational than playful. At 43 seconds in the video, the brindle looks to be doing feint and parry moves, which could be viewed as playful, however he then turns them into body slams which are rude. Brindle also puts his muzzle on the bulldog’s body for several seconds, which is also considered rude vs. playful. As the brindle slams the bulldog into the side of the chair, the BD is not free to get up – he appears trapped and brindle blocks him from moving. The brindle is the larger of the dogs and he is not doing anything to “self-handicap” or level the playing field to make play fun. Bulldog does not seem to want to play and gives signs indicating that (lip licks, shake off) he wants the activity to calm down, and brindle seems to ignore these signs.
