Good advice, @ruthabigail ! I agree; this pup needs to begin at the beginning.

In this video, I like his loose body language and how quickly he stops his playful biting when the boy says, “stop”. I think the pup is reading everything else the boy does as an invitation to play. It’s confusing when we have two youngsters not understanding each other!

This pup should be on a leash in the home, with the person holding the leash carrying the dog’s food on their hip. The dog is paid for every good behavior. All day long.

The children should not be waving their arms around the dog unless the dog is on lead at a distance and being paid for not going forward. The children can place food on the ground in a treat-trail for the dog to follow or help with hide-and-seek recall games.

    Prevention is key.

I once adopted an 11mo old golden from a family who had an 8yr old boy that the dog would grab and drag around the house. His own personal tug toy in human form. I put a head halter and lead on the dog anytime he was near my 2yo and 5yo children. We did this for 4 months, and I paid the dog his food, just as I’m recommending. It really helped. I also did training set ups where I had the children (eventually) play a form of red-light/green-light which was “go wild” and “stop” so that I could work on the dog’s default behaviors/impulse control when children would be children.

It’s a lot of time and energy, but the results are so worth it!
