Most of my clientele is older puppies and adolescent and adult obedience and B-mod…so HOW FUN IS IT?!?! that I just got an 11-week old female English cream retriever puppy client (with active retired couple parents) and her name is Daisy!!!

That said, I’m not a newb at puppies and training, but find that many of the games I have in my books may be too much right now. The owner has been playing some fetch with her and she’s enjoying bringing whatever back, from short distances.

We had our first lesson and it was so fun! She’s a delightful little learner (have I mentioned that English cream retrievers are one of my dream dogs to have?) and the owners are excited and responding well to R+.

What are your favorite games to play with puppies under 16 weeks old? I want to throw in a game at the end of our obedience lesson (I’m following the Puppy Primer book, by McConnell) and I’d love to give them a game or two to try out during the week. Thanks in advance.

What a score, @bernerlabreclectus ! I love working with puppies!

Maybe you can introduce a nose-based game, like finding hidden treasures around the house and yard?

Thanks, Virginia! I have a few nosework games like the muffin tin with treats inside and tennis balls on top; also the cup game (3 cups and a treat under one or two).

What other nosework would you think appropriate for puppies this age?

I am excited to coach them to play to learn.

ADORABLE!! What fun – and what a win for you!

My puppy “games” are focused on the goals of impulse control and husbandry: flirt pole work, default sit or down for access to food and exam training, nails etc. All my manners training are “games” for basic things like wait at the door, come when called, etc.

Everything’s a game if you label it that way. 🙂

Ha, I agree with you! Often, puppies make games of things that aren’t even planned that way, too. I was working with another older pup client and owner on LLW and he found great joy in eating a fuzzy dandelion and chasing a moth that had flown out of the grass when he did…that said, he was keeping the leash loose at the time and did a nice Touch recall back to his owner’s side.

I’ll think outside of the box! ????????. But, please, keep ‘em coming!
