    I know…dogs aren’t vegetarian! ‼️

But, I am and have been for 16 years. I don’t expect my pets to opt into a veg lifestyle. Lately, this has been bothering me though…because, I do it “for the animals”. I do not think dogs or cats are more important than chickens or pigs or cows. And this especially bothers me with baby animals, like lamb.

Lately I’ve been feeding Joy (my 17-month old Lab) Fromm Trout- or Salmon-based kibble. And I’ve purchased all sorts of meat-based dog treats, running my own business, for the past 6 years. I know fish are animals and have right to life, too…but, I have to feed my dog protein, so this is my thought: lesser of the evils.

Before anyone argues, please know: I have never bullied or looked down upon those who eat meat. When my daughter because vegetarian as a 12 year old, I told her she still had to eat fish or tofu/beans because cheese pizza and Mac and cheese are not being vegetarian! My longtime BF has been amazed by my acceptance of him eating meat and even cooking meat for him, at times.

So, my question, although maybe not popular: any suggestions for making my own dog treats or what fruits and veggies might work as training treats?

I will keep Joy on her fish based food, because she loves it and is a growing adolescent girl. But she LOVES fresh fruits, veggies, cheese and peanut butter. I tried @pawsup suggestions for broth-soaked frozen whole carrots. Joy loved them. She’s a fast eater. Ha. Always giving puzzles and scatter feed stuff to slow my puppy down. She loves fresh celery, blueberries, apples, carrots, bell peppers..

⭐️Thought if anyone else is veg or vegan, maybe we could support each other, too?

(Hope this isn’t offensive to anyone.) CHEERS! 🐶

I’m a vegetarian, too, but I feed my dogs meat and fish. Of the various non-meat snacks you mentioned, you might also try romaine lettuce. My dogs oddly love that.

I bet you could find easy recipes online with combine some sort of flour (or oats) with egg, applesauce, canned pumpkin or sweet potato, etc., if you wanted to bake some crunchy goodies for Joy.

Thank you, Virginia! I will definitely research it for future. I wanted to give Joy the best start and therefore, have her on dish while she’s growing still.

I didn’t know you were vegetarian! It’s great to find that out. I believe @pawsup is, as well.

My dogs LOVE dehydrated fruits and veggies. Magic will eat ANYTHING, ANYTIME. Bliss is a little more … discerning. 🤣

    Because I have a story for every topic🎯 , how’s this one:

Bliss thought I was crazy when I first started putting raw carrots in her daily rations. She’d carefully pick them out and set them aside for later. “Later” never came, and Magic happily cleaned them up.

Then I tried cooking the carrots – just a few minutes in the microwave, then cooled. She gobbled them up (she has a sweet tooth!) – After a couple weeks of that, I tried raw again and Bliss now eats them!

Moral: If you want your pups to like veggies, try them prepared in different ways. Adding a bit of fat to the preparation also makes them more palatable. (Then again, I watched a friend’s very “No-veggies, no-way, no-how” dog carefully lick the sesame oil and seasoning off a piece of stir-fried cabbage. Both my dogs would have swallowed that without a moment’s thought.)
