Alternatives to “High Value” Treats for Sensitive Bellies?
Posted by Anonymous Member on April 19, 2022 at 9:16 amWhat do you suggest doing when your dogs have sensitive bellies and can’t use high value treats? My dogs get sick from everything but low fat dog food.

If it is the high-fat content that is bothering their stomach have you tried freeze-dried fruit like bananas or apples? One of my dogs goes wild for frozen blueberries but won’t eat the fresh ones! Has anyone else found their dogs have strong preferences between raw/cooked/frozen treats?

Great idea, Jen. Carrots (esp cooked) and apples for some dogs are winners too.

@heather-foster it’s a great question and one that a lot of people probably have. If we’re barking up the wrong tree here (sorry, love the “dad jokes”) with the alternate food suggestions above then the next consideration is high value play with high value toys. Everything from flirt poles to tug toys can be thought of here and I know a lot of people need to build drive for those first. There are clever ways to do that if you need.

Also – check out our ▶Motivation channel◀ – you’ll find wonderful ideas for using toys, play, praise and “life rewards” in there. Here’s a post with a fun video by @anna and in the original post there’s a link with a teaching video on using tug.
