ANOTHER Walk Away demo!
Posted by Paula Mrazek on May 25, 2022 at 10:51 amHi!
Well, I wasn’t planning on posting another one, but on my training walk with another client dog, Rusty (who is a training client), we encountered a doe! Deer are a HUGE trigger for this dog, according to the owners, but we’ve been working on a seamless Walk Away cue and look how great he did!
Can you believe the deer started closing the distance in after I ended this video…I turned around and she was literally following us on the other side of the street, about 12 feet away! Rusty kept looking at me like, “OK, we’re walking away, NOW what do we do?”
We had to cut through someone’s yard to lose her, but I seriously was thinking she wanted to be trained, too! ????

WOW!! That’s amazing – good dog and GREAT handling! Thanks for grabbing that video. Did you show it to Rusty’s family? They must have been impressed and very proud of their boy.

Thanks, @catherine! I was happy to get the video, for sure. Hard to say if they were impressed. I did show the husband the video and sent it to the wife. They were both still mad at the dog for counter surfing am entire breakfast casserole from the weekend, off the table…I told them, this is all a process…

What a cool opportunity!
Well, there you have it @bernerlabreclectus , your methods and skills are in demand, even the deer are lining up to walk and train with you! What a great advertisement opportunity! ????
Thanks for sharing!!

This is AWESOME @bernerlabreclectus ! ????????
Such a good inspiration for so many of us that have dogs who want to lunge and chase. Thanks for sharing and oh by the way, what deer follows the interested dog?!? ???? -
Hello! Has anyone had experience with the opposite of being leash reactive? I am working with two Pekingese who are not very treat or toy motivated and when they see a distraction on a walk such as another dog they just sit and will not move for anything. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Hello @kab – thanks for bringing this topic. I’m really interested in the Pekes’ behavior. Can you give us a little more info about them? Their age… how long your walks are… whether the dogs do this for the owner or just for you… anything you can tell us about their health and other behavior? Are they fearful, possessive, uncomfortable around other dogs… anything you can tell us could help. Thanks!

Hi Catherine!
Thank you for you reply. So Dolce is a little over 1 1/2 years old and Bella is almost 1. They do this both with the owner and with me. They are both very healthy and they don’t exhibit any fearful or possessive behaviors. They seem to like most dogs. In fact when Dolce turned one year old I was invited to a doggy birthday party for her and both Dolce and Bella enjoyed interacting with all of the four legged guests! The owner tells me that she feels like it’s the Pekingese trait of being stubborn and not wanting to move. Not matter what it is – a dog in the distance, a dog in a front yard with an invisible fence, the mailman, the UPS driver – both dogs will sit and will not move for anything.

This is so cool! I do something similar with Wai, when we’re on walks. Same concept, except I like to use the word “Huli” (who-lee) it means turn in Hawaiian. Yes ???? I also use the “find it”. I love letting Wai play that game when I need to check/do something really quickly. I’ll just hide some treats around the house and say “find it”! Like a Easter Egg hunt. ????

Thanks for teaching us some Hawaiian! I like learning new words that we can teach our dogs -it’s like a secret code we can use with them. Great communication, too, letting Wai know a turn is coming.
