  • Are New Guinea Singing Dogs Trainable? New SPORTS Channel First Post!

Posted by Catherine Comden on March 4, 2022 at 11:19 am

????CATCH Program Director Tori Peterson Keyser is helping to launch our SPORTS Channel!

Her dog Kopi is a 1 yr old New Guinea Singing Dog – an unusual breed to be teaching Tricks!

But, believing that all dogs can be trained using positive reinforcement, Tori jumped in fearlessly and watch the video to see what she accomplished while Kopi was still a puppy! ????

Tori said: “When we were working on this she was between 3 months old and 1 year old. She now has her S.T.A.R. Puppy, Instinct and Novice Barn Hunt titles, and Novice and Intermediate trick titles.

New Guinea Singing Dogs are known, like the rest of the primitive breeds of dogs, for being “difficult to train,” “stubborn,” “hard-headed,” and a whole host of other negative stereotypes.

My advice is to ditch the labels as it doesn’t do anyone any good and just go for it! It is a blast training these breeds and as long as you figure out what motivates them, they make for excellent companions and training partners. – Tori P.

Excellent advice! Check out her video! https://youtu.be/8LWXpZpiICI

❓What do you think about breaking out of “breed stereotypes?”

@Catherine – Thank you for sharing this video! Kopi is such a smart dog!!! I think that goes along with that saying, “Train the dog you see in front of you…”

Breed stereotypes are a form of segregation, I think…just my opinion…a framework, sure, but look at the world around us. There is way too much of putting people in stereotypical “boxes”, out of convenience. If you get to know the actual person, there is usually more than just the what’s on the surface (not always, admittedly).

I hope that we can break through “breed barriers” here! Kopi is such a testament to that! Thanks, Catherine and Tori!!!

Hi Paula – thanks for sharing your thoughts – yes, all dogs are individuals and it’s important to give them as many opportunities for success as we can. Tori is doing amazing work, for sure.
