Barking Dog
Hi. I have a situation with dog that is barking very frequently. I’ve spent time with him and he seems highly sensitive to sounds like car doors closing, construction sounds such as saws and drills, gates and garage doors opening/closing, and other miscellaneous sounds. When he goes outside, he announces himself by barking. Other dogs barking, not surprisingly, also set him off. He’s high energy and intelligent. He’s very good at figuring out how to open doors. His guardian thinks he may be at least part Australian Kelpie. The family uses a white noise generator at night that keeps him from barking. However, during the day he barks frequently at random sounds. Even after playing with him at length, sounds distract him and cause him to bark. He does not bark while being walked but is highly reactive to other dogs. At dog parks he loves to play with other dogs with sparring and chase being the preferred types of play. Also he prefers rough play. I think his high energy may be a contributor to his sound anxiety. Does anyone have thoughts, ideas, or recommendations?
