During a recent LIVE meetup where we talked about training issues, professional dog trainer Vesna Ader brought a great case study question.
We came up with some possible solutions together… but before I post those, we’d love to give you all a chance to chime in. Watch this little video clip and then drop some suggestions into this thread.
What suggestions would you have for Vesna to motivate this dog?

I was once at a workshop where we were assigned shelter dogs to work with and the challenge was to develop a bond with the dog beyond just a transactional training relationship (trial, reward, repeat). This is not easy with every dog and I can relate to the situation Vesna is sharing. The dog was a Parson Russell Terrier and when outdoors, he had no interest in people or food rewards. Before long I found myself following HIM around, showing interest in everything he was sniffing, scratching at the dirt wherever he was. And soon, we ended up digging a hole together. This was the beginning of our bond! Sometimes you have to find creative ways to get on the same page.
