Car back seat cover and dog seat belt suggestions
Posted by Ann Tramuta on May 28, 2025 at 10:38 pmI am looking into purchasing a dog back seat cover and dog seat belt for my car that are durable and safe. Does anyone have any suggestions? Or any other ways to transport dogs in a car. I appreciate the input. It would be for the shelter dogs and some have fear/anxiety getting into a car.

@annteak9 I moved your topic outside of the private workshop group so more folks could see it and hopefully come with suggestions. Working with shelter dogs can be tough! I’ll tag a few people I know have some “boots on the ground” in that world, currently.

Hi Catherine,
I appreciate you moving my post so more people can provide feedback.

I like the seat covers that form sort of a hammock to prevent dogs from sliding onto the floor. I use an all-purpose seat belt that clips to any harness via carabiner. And lots of R+ training, rewards, toys, and lickimats on rides 🙂

Hi Lisa, @LisaOMy
Would you be able to provide a brand name for the car seat hammock and a universal seat belt? I appreciate your help.
Thank you,
Ann

Hi @annteak9
In my experience, some may be able to get the fearful/anxious dog in and out of the car once to go to the vet but leaving, the dog is now even more reluctant to get in the car or escalate behaviors.
For clients, I like to teach the dog to “go to crate” in a travel size crate. Then you can safely transport the dog in the crate in the car. Most often, an SUV type with a hatch.
I understand in the Shelter world training this may be limited. Sometimes an airline style crate can help.
Will the fear/anxious dogs be medicated?
Is it an option to have a vet come to the shelter? I know in my area there are a few traveling vets who do this. They usually make a 1/2 or full day or it depending on the shelter and needs.
WeatherTech makes some sturdy products.

Hi Jennifer,
I appreciate your feedback. I am actually looking for a backseat cover and seat belt for my car because I am thinking of Fostering dogs at the shelter. I will look into weather Tech. Sometimes the dogs have crates they will go in, in the car. The situation with medication would be a case-by-case basis I would think. I am not sure of that yet.
Thank you!

Ann, I’ve had an Orvis car seat hammock for over 10 years. It was more expensive than other brands but it’s lasted through many shelter dogs going into the back of my car. I also have a tether for the dogs who try to push their way up front.

Ferdie, Thank you for recommending the Orvis car seat hammock. I just looked at them & I am impressed. Wow! 10 years you have had yours. That’s a good quality product. Also, good to know it’s shelter dog tested & approved. That’s my plan to use it with shelter dogs. What brand tether do you recommend & use? @ferdie
