Dangerous Zoomies
Posted by Anonymous Member on July 8, 2022 at 4:40 pmHello everyone! I have a client with a big rescue dog that seems to be specifically slamming into their children, senior dog, and the back of their knees when excited. Any tips/ ideas on how to go about this?

Hi @koral – This is an interesting situation for sure. Can you give us some more details? What have you already tried?
PS – WELCOME – and please do hop over to Intros & Convos and give us a little info about yourself as well! We’re glad you joined our community.

I just met with this client yesterday so I haven’t tried anything yet. I’m so excited about having access to so many trainers with lots of suggestions, I figured I’d brainstorm an idea on here. The dog has shown to get over aroused very easily, and has absolutely no self awareness (slams right into you, invades his sisters space, and constantly tries to take a treat or food from her. He has a jumping problem too but that seemed to be very easy to re-direct into a sit, the owners just need to ask visitors to do the same. I’m really worried about the clients kids because a previous dog had actually broken the youngest’s collar bone. So it’s important for them to have a dog that can go from 100-0 soon. If anyone needs more details I can for sure ask!

How much physical and mental exercise is the dog getting? Are they getting enough downtime to relax to balance out their activity? Sometimes non-training-related changes can really take the edge off hyperactivity.
I completely agree with you @Koral about teaching an alternative behavior (like Sit instead of Jump). The trick I’ve found is to teach auto Sit (dog learns to get attention, food, toys, etc. all they need to do is offer a sit) instead of always asking for the Sit (often too late when they have already begun jumping).
Please do let us know how things are going with this client when you can.
