DIY – Make A Fleece Tug Toy | Downloadable PDF
Posted by Catherine Comden on September 22, 2022 at 4:28 pmWhat fun we had at our DD HoundTable group today, chatting about playing Tug and making fleece toys. So good, to hang out a bit and see people “face-to-face!”
If you missed the meeting and want to make your own Tug toy – I’ll share the step-by-step instructions for you – the first one is the hardest to make, but the good news is that “the dogs don’t care what it looks like, as long as you’re playing with them!” (The instructions are in the first comment!)
If you make one of these toys, please share your progress or final project here! We’d love to see it!

Great project and fun as well. Thank you for hosting. FYI I did some researching on what fleece is made of and of note there is No Glass! . However many fleeces have recycled plastic in them.
-
Awesome. Thanks for going the extra step to make sure our dogs are safe! Can’t wait to see your finished tug!

I’m all-thumbs (all left thumbs but the way) when it comes to crafty projects like this and I think with these instructions I’m going to give these fleece tugs a try!
Thank you for the how-to PDF. Looking at the written instructions, they read rather like spoken TAG points. Did you do that on purpose @catherine?
-
I do try to keep things simple. One item per page! It’s not TAG specifically but it gets the job done, I hope. Can’t wait to see what you come up with, @jenwalker – and remember, the dogs don’t care what it looks like! :????

Thank you for hosting Catherine! I enjoyed seeing others face to face – and learning something new as well!

After doing my first tug toy in the longer style I decided for my little dog to do a short one and this is how it turned out yesterday.
FYI I used 5 inch widths of fleece that was 29 1/2 inches long-Or half the length of most fabrics, to make this tug toy for my 10 pound dog.
Thanks again for hosting the webinar

OMD @minid21 Theresa!! YOU MASTERED THIS! This is absolutely beautiful! Love your color choices – and look how even all your spirals are – NAILED IT!! ????
How do you feel? Are you hooked on making these, now? Do all your doggie family and friends have a custom Tug coming for the holidays? haha????
-
Yes I am hooked and planning on custom tug toys for all of my friends and family dogs for Christmas.
FYI the tug toy in this picture turned out to be 18 inches long. It seems to be the perfect length for my little dog to carry around the house but she seems to like biting the first tug I made, that was made of 3 inch wide pieces of fleece.
My dog and I do scent work together and frequently I reward her with a 10 inch long narrow tug at the end of our search. I’m able to easily keep that tug in the side pouch of my treat bag. So I’m planning to figure out how to make a bunch of those for my friends who do scent work and have small dogs. When competing in scentwork, my understanding is that the rewards cannot squeak nor crinkle if you choose not to use food.

OH WOW! That’s so very cool. I love it and can’t wait to hear what your very lucky friends think of their new rewards. What an awesome gift.

Hi @catherine I am thinking of making this. But I can’t remember, was there a special type of fleece fabric you used? Thanks! ????
-
Hi Keala, I usually find old fleece blankets at a thrift store. Dollar Stores sometime sell the lightweight fleece blankets which work too… I’m not sure how to describe it to you… but it’s the stretchy “polar fleece”, not a looped weave of any kind (those shed like crazy!) When you cut the fabric, you will NOT see a bunch of little pieces floating to the ground if you have the right fabric. Also, this type of fleece is generally about twice as stretchy in one direction versus the other…
If you want your tug toy extra long and stretchy, cut the fabric along the stretchiest direction. For a stouter, shorter tug, cut the fabric against the grain. When you pull the fabric in either direction, you’ll be able to tell.
Good luck – and I hope you share your results here in DD!

Yay! Thank you! ???? I’ll will definitely share after. Thanks again! ????

It turned out great, @WaiThePuaPup – what a good job you did! How did you find the process?
-
It was SO much fun!!! It took me a bit to get the right pieces to the right places lol lots of going backwards and redoing. But overall fun! ???? ???? I realized I actually have some more fabric I will
be making some more ???? soon. ????
