Dog Snacks – Call for Recipes!
Posted by Catherine Comden on November 18, 2021 at 12:21 pmRecipe time! ???? What are your favorite kong stuffers, ???? frozen treats or dog biscuits to make? Please share (and cite your source, if the recipe is not your own.)
We all love to try new things to make our dogs happy! Here is one of our favs – pumpkin pupsicles. You can put a small amount of kibble in the bottom of a muffin cup, add a few tablespoons of canned raw pumpkin (not the pie filling – just pumpkin!) and stick a biscuit in the top if you like. Then freeze til solid. To pop the treats out, let rest on the counter for a few minutes or dip the pan into water to loosen the ice. This is a favorite recipe from a fellow shelter worker friend. Shelter dogs dig this! What have you tried?

This one I learned from the shelter where I volunteer.
Sweet potato/Yams chew
Cut the Yam into thin slices. Cut a small circle in the center using a cookie cutter or just carve some out using a knife. Bake them in the oven for 3 hr at 250F flipping once halfway thru.
Let them dry completely before stacking them thru a jute rope.
Simple and healthy chew for puppers ❣

I LOVE this idea! And what great, helpful photos. I knew I should have bought that giant bag of sweet potatos at Costco, the other day. May have to run back and get it. Joy loves sweet potatoes. I can see these even just being great treats, and keeping a long time when dried out. Thanks for the tip!

Beautiful post @RADS
Here’s my “cheat” recipe – it’s called leftovers grab bag. ???? I keep a container in the fridge that gets filled with table scraps such as cooked eggs the kids didn’t finish at breakfast, salmon skin from dinner, pieces of chicken, etc. If it’s something too big, I rip it or cut it into smaller pieces before I put it in the fridge. Then, I keep this at the ready for HARDER behavior requests I want from my dogs. For example, calling them in from the yard when I know they just saw (or smelled) the fox run through or coming away from the door when the doorbell rings. I have instant and enthusiastic compliance ???? for these situations as a result of the grab bag always being at the ready.-
I do something similar to this idea, David. Only my container gets water added to it and I keep a little scoop in there. I add one scoop of this ever-fresh “doggie bag soup” to each meal for a bit of variety (when I’m feeding from a bowl/food puzzle).

W O W – I like that. Brilliant new tip that I’m going to use, thanks for that share!

I know this hasn’t been touched in forever but I have something I do in the summer time. We fill ice cube trays with water and put some kibbles in them, great for hot weather when they’re panting up a storm.

Awesome, @cbradley – it’s always great to refresh an older post like this, especially when you have a super idea like this one. When my dogs had to spend a lot of time outdoors in the heat, I would take a big tub (like a plastic ice cream tub) and put a stuffed kong, a small chew stick and a couple other treats in it… then put it on the lawn. My old golden would just hang out with it for much of the day, licking it like a big ice cone as it melted.

That’s awesome! My dogs would rather be inside so that would be rather messy for me lol 😀

Oh wow, yeah, you’d have to invest in a room full of those fuzzy microfiber absorbent rugs! lol I guess ice cubes are a great choice for your “kids”. ????

Love your ice cube idea, @CBradley . I sometimes take a plastic container, fill with goodies and low-salt broth, plop the end of a rope in it, then freeze. Once you pop the frozen treat out of the container, you can hang it from a branch at the dog’s nose level. Great for dogs who enjoy a bigger challenge.

Oh my gosh I want to try all these! I freeze bone broth a lot for popsicles, or try banana and watermelon in the summer.
Also the fridge scrap bin idea, I am stealing ???? I love the idea of not wasting good food but also getting a healthy treat for my dogs.
Also side note, on their birthday I make pup cakes. they are easy and healthy and the dogs love them!
It’s just peanut butter, banana and potato.

@mtnwolfpup – are the pupcakes baked? I need the recipe please!
