Drug detection dog
Posted by Bruce MacWatters on August 28, 2022 at 8:29 amA pic of my drug detection dog back in 1984. His name was Charlie. He was a 17 pound Corgi. I was stationed on the island of Crete. They used small dogs because it was easier for them to search small spaces on Navy Ships

Wow, this is a capture. Were you training back then, or handling an already trained dog?

I did training at lackland AFB with brand new dogs however the dog in the pic was already trained

Oh @bmacwatt how did I miss this post!?! I love this photo and would like to know more about your experiences doing that. Feel free to tell all the stories – or even just one. ????

So the little corgi in the pic is named Charlie. I pretty sure the pic is in 1984. Charlie was a drug detection dog. Back then I thought I was a dog trainer, looking back I realized I was far from a trainer, I was more of a dog handler but I knew a lot about drug detection work I knew nothing about dog behavior. Charlie use to try and bite me when I put his food down. At the time I didn’t know anything about resource guarding food. He would eat his food in about 3 seconds. One day I left the room while he was eating and came back about 10 mins later and he was laying on his side and not moving. When I saw his stomach, I knew he had bloat. I was stationed on an island in the middle of the Mediterranean with no veterinarian on the island. I picked up Charlie and drove to the airport in my police car. I won’t say how fast I was going. I forced my way on to a civilian air plane and landed in Athen’s Greece. I was running with Charlie yelling at everyone to bring me to a vet. I eventually made it to vet and he had surgery. Charlie recovered. I thought I was going to go to jail for all the rules I broke but it all worked out . I instead received a Air Force Medal for saving Charlie’s life. It all worked out in the end

OHMYGOODNESS! That’s a story for sure – Lucky Charlie!! WOW – bloat is nothing to trifle with and he was so lucky to have you in his court on that one. I’m glad you got a medal for it. Well deserved. Thank you for your service, of course, and for saving Charlie.
