Last month, I received a spectacular gift: permission from a property owner to walk with my dogs on 40 acres of open, rolling land directly across the street from my house. Every day we go there and I have the joy of watching my dogs sniff, explore, and race around off leash. Even my 12 year old dog races around like a young pup, and it really hammered home for me how essential it is for dogs to have that kind of freedom of movement. My dogs cover SO much more ground than I do during our jaunts, so I feel good about the exercise and enrichment they’re getting.

Of the very few things I still prioritize in training for my own dogs, the recall is the most important. It’s only because of that training I feel safe allowing them off leash in specific environments. Depending on the dog you have, there could be quite an investment in time to train a truly reliable recall. Leslie Nelson is a particular inspiration for me, having shared her methods for training a reliable recall even with afghan hounds.

Who are your training inspirations for recalls? And what specific recommendations do you make to clients for dogs who have less-than-stellar training on their recalls but who would benefit from off-leash freedom?
