Hello! I’m new to running group classes and I love it so far but I would like to have more games/interactive/fun activities to include in class. Right now I end a class with a speed recall challenge and another with an “obstacle course” where they have to complete cues we’ve been working on during class like sit, down, bungee stay, touch, ect. But I would love to hear any tips, tricks or games you are willing to share. Thank you! ????

Welcome to the wide world of group classes @K9Ashley and bravo for thinking ahead to create a fun and engaging environment for your learners!

I like to play Simon Says and Basic Skills Square Dancing on day six of my group classes to give everyone a chance to show off some skills in a playful way.

I do know that some trainers incorporate games throughout their classes and I’m looking forward to what other folks have to add.

@jenwalker – thank you! I really enjoy it and it seems like a great way to reach owners and hopefully prevent some common behavior problems. Thank you so much for those ideas, I totally forgot about Simon says! I would love to hear how you set up the square dance obedience

Honestly, it is more like contra dancing in the round; I call out known cues to the teams and keep them moving around the room. I make a point of giving shout-outs to the teams when they perform the skills (“Great Sit at Stop Jane and Fido”, “Look at that Heel work from Joe and Fluffy”); sometimes other teams start to cheer each other on which really makes my day!

@K9Ashley I love teaching with games – it’s so fun for everyone. It looks like Terry Ryan has a new group class games book out – I bet it’s a great resource; has anyone taken a look at this?

I have this book! Close to 100 games in a group setting. All of them can be modified for different levels although the dogs should know basic cues. Fun ideas – I would definitely recommend it.
