Happy Nail Trims – How Do You Know When It’s Time for the Next Step? Part 6
When you are seeing your dog RELAX ☺ and offer a paw, then you know it’s time to progress forward in your plan. If your dog is not relaxed, don’t get in a hurry; go back to earlier steps! If you are getting consistent willingness to engage, and you see your dog offering a paw, then it’s time to go for a little bit more action.
In this case, Bliss was ready for me to target the Dremel to her nail. This is an important step; don’t go too fast! Especially if your pup was scared by the Dremel at any point, this has the potential to bring back the fear. Do one touch, reward, then toss food away to give your dog CHOICE.
????Remember to keep your sessions really short! At this stage, my sessions were maybe 30-60 seconds. I just kept the Dremel nearby my work station. When she’d come over to “check in”, I’d greet her then “ask” if she wanted to play my Dremel game by picking it up. She’d offer her paw, I’d touch the Dremel to a nail, feed her and toss food away. I’d put the Dremel down and get back to work. One or two touches a couple of times each day. Soon, it just wasn’t enough for her…. and that’s
EXACTLY.
Where I want her! ????
Have fun – and let me know how it’s going!
