@David Muriello and I were chatting recently about motivating dogs, and he suggested ways to engage and observe dogs to discover their natural interests.

This short clip of our conversation goes well with the Reward Discovery sheet and Find the Value game we have shared earlier in this channel.

When working with a new dog, what are things you do, to get to know their favorite rewards?

Bumping this up, as I’d love to know what you all do, to get to know a dog’s favorite motivators?

I have found that my little chiweenie loves to jump on obstacles and to use rocks and natural parts of the environment to stop and do a stretch. She will now stop at her “yoga” rock so she can stretch out her hind legs, back and neck. It makes the walk exciting, more interesting and helps keep her joints and body healthy – and she loves it.

I love these snippets, Marj @HHPS thanks for sharing! It’s a great creative example of everything you said above, but also shows how you can teach a dog something with a lure/reward approach and then you may later find those actions are intrinsically rewarding to the dog without the food. Can anyone think of any other canine sports or games that often follow that process?
