How much do you resemble you favorite dog breed?
Posted by Lisa O'Brien on January 30, 2023 at 10:49 amIt is said that people tend to physically resemble their dogs – but how closely do you share personality traits with your favorite breed?
My favorite breed is any Pit Bull type dog (“Bull Dog” as categorized by Kim Brophy).
Here’s what I think we have in common:
Sensitive nature – much like these physically stoic dogs, physical pain garners a “meh” from me, but if you hurt my feelings, you’ll find me ugly crying in a corner somewhere LOL. I also cry at commercials, cute pictures of animals, thinking about something sad that happened 20 years ago, and nostalgic family time. I once burst into happy tears while standing on the beach with my mother because I saw a dolphin. True story. My dogs will ignore a badly fractured nail or scratch across the eyeball from a twig (based on real events), but become very emotionally injured when someone doesn’t want to play or they think someone’s in a bad mood, to the point where they excessively kiss each other and make up like little emotional cartoon characters.
Going from 0 – 60 in 1 second – these dogs are all or nothing. Something fun is happening? WE’RE POPCORN PUPS JUMPING AROUND AND HAVING A BLAST UNTIL WE PASS OUT! For me, I’ll sit quietly listening during a conversation, but the second the topic turns to something I’m passionate about, I’m babbling in an over-excited tone, flapping my arms, talking until I’m physically out of breath. Then I need a nap.
Physically the only things we have in common are large noggins. My actually head is average size, but my hair is enormous, so I think that counts ???? I am envious of my dogs’ muscles. I look like a pillow in comparison.
Your turn! How do you resemble your favorite pups?

This was hilarious, @LisaOMy !!
My favorite breed is a German shepherd, and I think I’m similar to them. Wary of or indifferent towards strangers, deeply loyal to a few, serious about my job, but can be coaxed into some ridiculous goofiness. This was a pic of my big brother when I was a baby. His name was Duke.

Love the GSD style of the past. They were amazing dogs! I see you as a GSD, @virginiad – makes total sense, now! ????
-
@virginiad oh my gosh, what a great big brother to grow up with! And I love your description of your similarities! We always find our “people” even when those people are dogs 🙂

???????? this is glorious, GLORIOUS!
At first when I became a husky mom, I felt there was now way I am like these magnificent and outrageously beautiful dogs.
Overtime I quickly realized it’s like looking in a mirror some days. They are have all the class and all sass and god are they strong willed. Oh and a spirit that is driven by adventure. People see only beauty when they looking at husky( and yes I guess my face is kind nice to look at) but the core of the husky when you see their true colors leave you wondering… why do you act like a crazy fool! You goon!
Yup that’s me. The good kind of crazy. Like you want to keep talking to me and hanging out but sometimes fear for your safety when we go and travel. Which brings me to adventure. I wanderlust and yearn for adventures. That is maybe why I feel so at home behind a group of wild huskies taking me into the forest.
I should come with a hazard warning sign, and in some ways I think so should the husky. Or at least a yes I may seem like a beauty but deep down I am really just a beast.

@mtnwolfpup THIS IS AWESOME! Made me actually LOL a couple times. Love it.

@dot OMD these beauties!! Such a group! Such a snap! Who are they all?
You are compassionate and empathic, I’ll bet. That’s what draws you to the fearful ones. You are driven to help them because you deeply understand their feelings. ????
-
Thank you for your kind words. Your kindness brought tears to my eyes. I am so thankful your compassion stretches across the species barrier. Perhaps so many women work with dogs, although fearful pups is usually from lack of socialization and fearful women from traumatic events and abuse, the resulting fearfulness is very similar.

@LisaOMy Such a fun discussion!
I’m very like my Aussies. Creative, fun loving, but also super serious when working. I wish I was as athletic as they are. I’m certainly as driven. My Aussies are more social/less suspicious than many of the livestock lines out there. I joke that they are part golden retriever, as they love meeting new friends. Me, too.
Last year, Joy and I traveled and lived in a 20-ft trailer together. I snapped this selfie and then exclaimed, “When did I become my dog!?” ???? The resemblance is uncanny. This is one of my favorite photos.
-
It must have been such a dream to travel that way with your dog! I’d love to hear more some time!
-
It was exceedingly dreamy… right up until I stumbled upon Bliss in the Arizona desert. She cramped our style considerably ???? We struggled for a few months and then I found a spot to put down roots. Now that I have a 3rd dog.. my beloved Maya (the trailer) sits forlorn in my backyard. I hope for some weekend adventures this summer though!

Arizona is so cool. I’m a cold weather and woods person, but I really thought Arizona was gorgeous when I visited. Just such alien looking terrain. Beautiful.

So true; I enjoyed my time from the Mojave through AZ, NM and TX. Was super glad to get up to OK and find freshwater lakes. I think being in the desert may have skewed my perspective but those lakes are delish!
First photo is Joy at what I referred to as “Nostril Mtn” outside Lake Havasu, AZ. Second photo is sunset at Skiatook Lake, OK.

This looks SO fun! ????
I am still learning about my breeds, maybe you folks can help me choose.
???? Here are my characteristics:
I am in LOVE with pine tree forests,
I love “sniffing” the great outdoors,
I am quiet most of the time outside as soon as I’m home, I can talk too much ????
I don’t really like exercising unless it’s with other people. ????
I get along very well with most animals.
Okay choose away! ???? ????
-
I’m guessing a Lab or Retriever of some sort, with a touch of hound ? Maybe the others have better suggestions, @Keala_Wai …LOVE that you love the pine forests!

Let’s see…I don’t actually have any dogs off my own (yet). Dogs of my past ( ???? “To All The Dogs I’ve Loved Before”….a twist variation a la Willie Nelson):
1. Beagle: intense and vocal
2. Samoyed: intense and hard-working
3. English Setter: Gentle and focused
4. Bernese Mountain Dog: conqueror of difficult terrains
5. Yellow Lab: loyal, loving and velcroish
How about a mix of all of these?! Wouldn’t that be a mix!!!
-
Haha this combo has me giggling. I am imagining you running up a flight of stairs two at a time I to someone’s home, intense stare on your face, getting to the top, helpfully moving some heavy furniture out of the way while still staring at the person who is home and sitting on the couch wondering what is happening, then gently sitting down next to them and softly placing your head on their shoulder and the entire time, you’re screaming I LOVE YOOOOOUUUUUU!
-
OMD!!! You are cracking me up! I think a few of these past dogs have been somewhere in that mix (especially the Beagle!, except for moving the heavy furniture)…and, my first Samoyed DID say, “I LOVE YOU!” (Slightly interpreted by us, but it was pretty dang close!). HAHAHAHAGAHAHAAAA!!
-
I love it! Yes it would be a really fun combo! ????
