How Our Body Language Affects Dogs
When interacting with dogs, we need to be very mindful of our own body language and how it affects them. Years ago, a newer trainer asked me to observe her while she was teaching group classes so I could provide feedback. At one point during class, she was showing someone how to lure their dog into the DOWN position, but was having trouble getting him to actually lie down. In this case, the dog was super-sensitive to the fact that she was in a standing position and then leaning over to lure. As soon as she shifted to a crouched position, the dog was right on board!
We can also intentionally use body language to help get certain behaviors going. For example, I often walk backwards and pat my thighs when I’m introducing simple recalls because that tends to draw the dog toward me.
How do you use body language intentionally to impact a dog’s behavior?
