In this clip, I’m talking about how we used small cones for marking stopping points in a circle, to help teach horses to LLW! Yesterday, we used small piles of hay as markers for helping an injured horse understand that we were trying to walk him toward an exit from the muddy field that had better footing. Even though he wasn’t hungry, when we put the small piles at about 8 ft distances in a line toward the unusal gate, it was as if a lightbulb went on and he understood what we were asking (he got paid in carrot coins for his little, gimpy tries – he’s now safely in a stall where we can monitor his wellbeing and treat his injury!)

Zooming out from these equine examples, why can’t we use mailboxes, light poles, fence posts or other visual patterns in our regular walking routines to help our dogs discover walking in partnership?

Have you tried using visual markers (targets) as touchpoints for helping a dog figure out what pattern we’re looking for?
