Oh this is so great – love the “laughing” breaths too. Thanks for sharing Dakota’s dance with us! – Does the dance always involve another object? Are there any guesses why they do this? Is this something that is inherently the Bull Terriers’? So many questions, @denise

Yes this is common in the bull terrier breed, my first bull terrier did the same thing and they just called the Huckle buck dance. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Dakota: “I can form my own style of treadmill anywhere.” ????

I’m a bit curious about this, dog trainers and educators – feel free to correct me on this one! I remember seeing Catherine’s post about caching and it seems to me like Dakota is actually following a similar pattern as the dog in that demonstration video. While not actually “digging” into anything, Dakota does look like they are looking into corners, and under objects, to find a space. Is it possible that it this could be an attempt at caching?

This is a good observation and an honest question, @krishc So much of body language is observation within certain contexts. When we take a snippet of behavior out of context, it can mirror a lot of other similar things. With caching, we would expect there to be something that is actually being hidden… a bone, chewie, treat or toy… something valuable to the dog. @denise was there anything like that possibly going on? Or, how else do we know this is a “dance” rather than something else?
-
I immediately thought of the relationship between those two videos, too, @krishc !
Dogs turn our homes into playgrounds for their instincts. After all, what choice do they have? Our kids do the same! My daughter was climbing on Adirondack chairs in the yard this morning and I was like, “that’s not a playground” and in her mind she was probably like, “clearly that’s open to interpretation.” ???? -
This is common with Bull Terrier‘s and there is no treat hidden anywhere in the bed LOL. They do not have to have an object under them or around them to do the dance. They’ll do it on carpet or wooden floors too. You can Google it they have several examples. I’m glad you enjoyed it. It is a unusual dog behavior.

This is a perfect example of sharing breed-specific knowledge, @denise I hope you will continue to educate us more on Bull Terriers over in our shiny-new Breed Discovery channel. I’d never heard the term “hucklebuck dance” before this! Thanks so much for sharing.

Hi Denise-
I love watching bull terriers and would love to learn more about specific things they do. Its always been a breed that I’ve been interested in (even before Spuds). Thanks for sharing!

My Jack Russell does the same thing, sometimes for 30-60 seconds!
-
That’s really interesting, @susanrr – any chance you can grab video and share it? We’d love to compare the two!
