Hello All – I am a recent graduate of CATCH program. I met a new client yesterday to help with training of her 2 rambunctious Labs (1.5 and 2.5 years old). She said with older dog they had a trainer in who usined IMPRINTING. I am not familiar with this. I tried googling and did get much info. She also said he used adversives , assuming shock collar. Can anyone provide a little information about IMPRINTING? any help appreciated

Hi Elaine, I’m not sure what your client may have meant using that term – people use terms differently all the time. The only way to really know is to ask them for more details… I’m sure they’d love to tell you, and it’s a great way to honor what they have done in the past. By being open minded and asking questions about their past experiences, we can learn a lot and it really can build rapport.

The way I understand imprinting is that it’s an intense period of socialization that (in dogs) ends at about 12 weeks of age. Here’s a nice article by Sarah Hodgson on it.
Regardless, if the dogs are over a year old, the season for the use of imprinting is long past and the real work of training is here. Were there specific issues the owner was looking to solve?

What a great article. Thank you for sharing! I had not used the term “imprint” in that way before.

WOW great article. I even went to the Sarah website when googling but didnt see this article. Also confusing because the owner said he used adverives (i believe ecollar) – I will get more information in general when we talk again. Thank you for this great information and article.

This may help about explaining Aversion. It’s a good article with examples of other types of training tool ideas. Keep us updated
