This might sound like a strange idea, but I just bought myself a new journal with the express purpose of charting progress and my own growth…but, through reflecting on dogs and puppies and their people whom I’ve helped this past 4-1/2 years. I can’t believe it’s been that long already.

I often find myself thinking about a past scenario in my training, dog walking and pet sitting journey; it would be great to be able to look back at what was. Sometimes I can help myself with a current client by remembering the issues of another similar case.

I also think how amazing it is that I started my business right when COVID started, in March 2020. My very first training client was a word-of-mouth referral to a young married couple and their reactive and fearful mini goldendoodle. I had met the young woman’s mother while I was walking another dog, a reactive Border Collie. She was excited to find me for her daughter, and the daughter actually called me! I was trying to figure out how to make it all happen, right at the start of the pandemic. We wore masks, we met outside and even had our first lessons outside! To think of what I know now and what I had to do to just launch my training business…it’s scary and crazy!

Has anyone done this journal project with your training career, for your own purposes? I’d love to know your thoughts…

This is a superb idea. I wish I had done so – my book would be written already. lol. I kept records, notes on the paper private lesson sheets I used. But not so much reflections, and how things worked out. I probably forgot more than I learned along the way. Good for you!
