  • Liven Up a Shelter Dog’s Kennel with This Idea! – Video

Posted by Catherine Comden on November 22, 2021 at 4:31 pm

Last week we shared a video to a shelter dog receiving enrichment outside the kennel. But enrichment can also be (and should be!) given inside the kennel. Here’s a video of a shelter dog enjoying a creative food puzzle toy. I could see this working well with the idea that @RADS shared, using sweet potatoes!

What do you think of this dangling idea? What other ideas do you have for making a shelter dog’s kennel experience more enriching?

    Great idea!

I have frozen kibble with veggies or treats in a paper cup and placed these “pup pops” in each kennel. The dogs love them and no. Not one dog has eaten the paper cup.

Also a great idea, @Achtung Barbara. Fun to make and fun to distribute too!

This is a great idea to keep the dogs busy and working inside the kennel.

I have asked Volunteers to bring in egg cartons, lids intact, and we fill with kibble. Sometimes we poke a hole in the egg cells other times we don’t. It is interesting to see how each dog works the puzzle or not.

Sometimes the simplest ideas are “simply the best”. Over Thanksgiving weekend my one-year-old niece agreed. She got this really fun toy where little cars get dropped down a series of ramps and zig zag their way to the bottom. What did she play with the whole afternoon? The box it came in.
As far as enrichment for dogs – viva la recycling bin!
