Lyko, the mouthy border collie
Sorry to be joining so late, but it seems like every new client I have is so mouthy and bite inhibition was never learned.
I am working with a a 7 month old border collie mix, “Lyko”. Traits bossy, herding, and nipping. The main caretaker is the only one he homes in on. Nipping, hard biting, and herding his human mommy. These bites are a class one at times.
He will follow my instructions: stand like a tree, hands and arms folded up high. I have found a sit and tossing treats will allow owner to move and go into the house without his nipping. He is better, but the owner is becoming fearful and Lyko, is also picking up on that. He also lunges and barks at cars and trucks while on walks. When he becomes frustrated he also nips the closest person. He is very smart and learns fast, but I also think the client is not following thru with my training plans, because she is fearful. Because he lunges and barks at cars and trucks. I have showed her how to put leash behind her and to use her body weight as an anchor. They do not want to rehome. I will be instructing them and Lyko to use a muzzle. This would eliminate some of her anxiety. I find Lyko to be a sweet dog. They have puzzles, licki mats, etc. And the son gives him exercise, and works on some tricks. What else can someone suggest? Oh , I have done all of the textbook plans. .
