Motivating Service Dog Behaviors – Duck Gets Tissues
Posted by Catherine Comden on May 11, 2022 at 11:49 amGinger shared this fun video awhile back, showcasing her dog, Duck, retreiving a box of tissues upon hearing the “achoo” cue.
How is Duck being reinforced for this behavior?
Optional for trainers: What could be a next step in the training process, for a working service dog?

While I don’t have much to add here, I must say I LOVE how duck is acting!! Being all formal, almost like he’s saying “would you like a tissue madam?” ????

Right? @KrishC the mark of a well-trained service dog is being calm and accurate with their trained behaviors. Very different than a trick!

Reward is praise and treat. Next step could be taking the used tissue and dropping in the garbage can. Way to go Ginger!

Hi Lisa! Haven’t seen you in a bit – glad you are back. That’s a good idea for next step and really interesting because not at all where my brain went. Dog training = science and art. The artsy part is, what do we work on, next… It’s fun to be creative here – so good – thanks for sharing. ???? @lisad

Agreed @lisad – what I noticed, and thought was truly wonderful, is all the happy engaged body language throughout the whole behavior – not just when the verbal praise began. From his ear movements in response to her greeting, to his jaunty tail wag – he seemed to be have a wonderful time “working” with his person!
This got me to thinking about how behaviors themselves can be reinforcing, in desirable and undesirable ways.
