Today we’ve had some light to steady rain. Much like the vast majority of dogs, mine isn’t a fan of doing her business outside in the rain. After her chicken was done in the air fryer, I ripped off a chunk and walked outside in the rain. Guess who followed? After giving her potty cue she did her business, got her chicken, and then we both ran inside. I’m not going to lie, it was a bit fun and I am happy that she was able to overcome the elements in order to get some good, air fried chicken.

It’s a variation on lure and reward! Then, a great use of a double reward – first, the chicken, then getting to come in from the rain is the second reward. Sometimes the simplest things can be so effective.

That is a fun example of changing a reinforcer to match the requested task. Thank you for sharing your success with us @Brian! When talking to clients about this, I sometimes use the term Hazard Pay.

I have a rain-adverse dog in my household too; Gusto can seem completely convinced that he is going to melt or drown or something, and has taken to eliminating under our deck during the wet Washington winters.

I’ll give your trick a try and let you know how it goes!
