I am interested in any recommendations anyone has regarding bringing a puppy home – how puppy should be transported to minimize stress and trauma (e.g. – pup in blanket on lap or in crate/carrier even if pup isn’t crate trained, treats – is it a good idea given diet protocol breeder has had puppy on, etc.). I want to make sure that the pup’s journey is both safe and not stressful.

    Thanks,

    Amy

Good morning @doggonespecial and CONGRATULATIONS on your puppy!

I think you are on a good (and empathetic) track considering ways to mininize the stress of travel, knowing that it will in all likelihood be a first experience of this sort for your pup. Maybe meld your two ideas together and put a blanket that smells like the pups mom and/or siblings along with one that smells like you in a crate for the trip? That way, you get the safety of the crate along with the comfort of them scents!

What mode of transport are you and the pup taking, car, plane, something else? When is the big day? Any pictures to share yet?

    I agree with these recommendations/considerations from @jenwalker , @doggonespecial
Most puppies, especially younger, are going to whine for a day or two no matter what you do because they are so used to being with their littermates and they are going to be coping with change. So, any comfort you can add is helpful and scent is a great place to start. You could get one of those snuggle puppy dolls, too, where you can add a warmer inside and turn on the heartbeat. Scientifically speaking, I don’t know for sure whether this helps, but I did it just in case it helped. ????
Also, when I drove Lido home from North Carolina back to New Jersey, I actually him in a bag on the front passenger seat next to me (bag buckled in place) so that I could put my hand in the bag a lot and make him as comfortable as possible. ????
