  • Pupdate! 5 weeks old – Bliss’ puppies are seeing the world!

Posted by Catherine Comden on November 26, 2024 at 6:52 pm

Our pups are 5 weeks old, and it’s incredible to see how much they’re learning and growing every day. They’re taking full advantage of this critical period, and I’m thrilled with the progress they’re making as they explore their world and develop important life skills.

    This Week’s Highlights

    • Expanding Their Space: The pups are loving their larger play area, which is packed with textures, toys, and challenges. They’re getting to exercise both their bodies and their curious little minds!
    • Sounds of the World: Every day, they’re exposed to a variety of recorded sounds like traffic, thunderstorms, and kids laughing. Add to that the classical music during their quiet time and the normal household noises they hear daily – these pups are becoming pros at taking it all in stride.
    • Positive Handling: My brother has been a rockstar puppy socializer this week. With his beard, hat, and calm demeanor, he’s helping the pups feel confident around men with different looks. Lots of cuddles and play have made his visits a highlight.
    • Potty Preferences: Here’s an exciting development… several of the pups have already started preferring to potty outside! We’ve been making multiple “race-you-to-the-backdoor” runs, and they’re catching on so quickly. It’s a testament to how smart and intuitive these little Aussies are.
    • Bulding Fluency: Social play continues to be a favorite activity. Whether they’re wrestling, chasing, or figuring out boundaries, every interaction is teaching them how to communicate and coexist with others. Bliss and Magic are peacefully breaking up sibling squabbles and ensuring nobody gets too charged up.

    What’s Coming Up?

Next week, I’ll be focusing on introducing the pups to kids. They’ve met just a few, but there can never be enough, in my opinion. It’s so important for them to have positive, calm experiences with little humans during this stage. I’ll be carefully supervising to ensure everything stays fun and upbeat.

We’ll also continue adding new challenges and textures to their environment, along with more outings in the puppy stroller. These pups are shaping up to be confident, curious, and absolutely delightful! I can’t wait to share how they do with the next steps in their adventure.

OMD, @Catherine! Again, just in awe. They are so precious and so smart!!! You are living the dream! I really love seeing them all…individuals and perfect.

What a program you have going on with your breeding kennel already. I love watching them grow up. Thank you!!!

???? Thanks Paula. My brother is visiting and last night when we brought the pups in from outside we both were lying on the floor with puppies (and Bliss & Magic) climbing and smootching us… this morning he said,

“Lying on the floor in a pile of puppies is the best mental health medicine there is.”

      And I agree!

I have to lift my head up from the work of it all (I’m ALWAYS thinking about how they perceive their experience and what I should be doing, next, and oops that ???? happened and all the rest of it) and soak it all in. I can’t believe we are past the halfway point. I didn’t want to send the pups to new homes before Christmas unless there was a compelling reason, so they are going home at 9.5 weeks. While I will relish longer sleeps and less laundry, I wouldn’t trade this experience!!

        @catherine

Awe, that’s wonderful to have your brother there and for his external wisdom to reflect upon. A pile of puppies! Ha!!! I’m smiling, imagining you both soaking that in.

So beautiful the way you are thinking about how everything reflects upon how and what they experience and this huge amount of stability you are sending them to their new homes with. Kudos for keeping them until 9-1/2 weeks! It’s like each pup has a comfy trust fund in their piggy bank!

This will be a Thanksgiving for you to remember, for sure.???? Hope you and your canine family have the best one yet.
