Read the BEET – Let’s See Those Ear Shapes! – Recap
Posted by Catherine Comden on May 8, 2023 at 9:50 am????Rose and ????bat and ????prick and ????flap – just a few of the ear types in a variety of dog breeds.
A quick clip from last month’s LIVE Houndtable to get us started talking about ears. ????
Post a couple of ear pics and share your dog in different situations.
Tell us:
- What do those ears do when your dog is alert?
- How about relaxed?
- What does “playful” look like, vs. “focused” in your dog’s ear carriage?
Let’s see it!

I’ll go first! Aussie ears come in two shapes. Button is the term for the little triangle ear carriage. Rose is the term for the ear that folds long-ways. Joy has rose ears. Bliss has one of each at times… though button shows up on both sides if she’s really excited.
The photo on the right is full-arousal, during a play session. Both ears are forward (She’s coming forward!) and alert. They are in button mode.
The photo on the left is during a cuddle sesh. She’s got her ears folded back, exposing the canal in that classic “pet me more” invitation. Her expression seals the interpretation.

Wai’s ears are SO EXPRESSIVE! He’s probably in the “semi-prick” or “tipped” shape category, along with Shelties & Collies – love these examples of him in different emotional states!
