@Catherine this is an excellent infographic! I describe this exercise as red light-green light but I love the idea of using their desire to sniff as a reinforcer.
Have any of you played a similar game? What do you find works best? If I have a dog who is really struggling to get from point A to B (the sniffing area) without pulling, I will keep a high reinforcement rate as we are heading to point B with the final reinforcer the ability to get some good sniffs in.
Ooh – I like this, @AmyMc – paying really frequently for the walk-at-side while moving toward the ultimate reward of getting to sniff. Talk to us a bit more about how you help clients with this strategy, please! How do you work with them to break down the goal into something the dog can do, when so many want to simply “leash up and go”?
I always try to phrase things in a way that is relatable for my clients. I will encourage them that their dog is doing VERY difficult work in a highly distracting environment and needs frequent feedback from them in the form of reinforcement for walking with a nice loose leash.
