    Hi!

I am sorry to read that you have a dog that is struggling and seemingly very protective of its resources.

Resource guarding is a natural behavior however, not a desired behavior.

Please take all precautions to keep everyone safe.

Can you describe what exactly is happening?

Management is key to any “unwanted or undesired” behavior.

Then, to change behavior we use a systematic approach to change associations. This can take time.

If you are unsure of techniques, I would reach out to a behavior consultant who can help you identify triggers and solutions.

Hi @beamer Paula – I’ve moved your topic over to the Help Me With This Case channel where you may get a better views. Resource guarding can look different to different people, so would you please give us more details? The age of the dog, the other social elements like who the dog is keeping away (other dogs or people?) and the intensity of the guarding – it could be everything from a hard stare and a little grumbling to a full attack!

We are mostly dog trainers and some behavior consultants in this group, so while we can give some general recommendations, it would be unethical for us to try to completely solve an aggression issue without a full behavior analysis. You’ll be best served with a 1-1 consultation with a qualified consultant who can take the time to “go deep” with you and discover the root causes and best strategies. You can find veterinary behaviorists here and certified behavior consultants here.

That said, we’re happy to offer some gentle strategies for mitigating the issue if you’ll give us more details. We would love to help keep everyone safe and prevent the issue from growing.

    Thanks!

Paula, there have also been a number of other discussions about guarding on our pages. Use the search tool to find them – try looking for terms like aggression and resource and see what comes up!
